Soon we will all be home together for the holidays. We all can feel the pressures of this, whether it’s mood changes due to sensory overload or just the aggravation of sibling dynamics. It is a tale as old as time.
I have found that it helps to set up stations in the home where each child can spend 15 or 20 minutes (or however long) in each place. Whether it’s a puzzle table, a reading nook, a special chair to listen to stories on audio, or just a calm down area to decompress. I also love a contemplative station where we can write a hope or prayer or wish. It helps to keep in mind that each station involve some sensory based activity. Think like a pre-school classroom set up, but strategic in the home.
When cabin fever hits hard, remember to get outside to really ground ourselves. Walking and talking is also a great family activity, my friend Trudy calls them “walkie talkies.”
Hoping you can make your homes places of comfort, renewal, and rest during the holiday season. Be creative and take joy in your space!
