Regulation in the home
Days like today, where we feel a little cooped up because of the weather, can make it easy for children to get more dysregulated. Wild movement, yelling, fighting – all of this can be a way to help regulate a nervous system to feel more energized when stuck inside at home. To recognize this, and have awareness of what is at the root behind all the wild behaviors, helps us to have compassion for what our kids are experiencing in their bodies. This helps us to provide experiences to think of it as regulating their nervous systems, rather than misbehaviors that need to be punished (although there can definitely be some of that too!). This can be even trickier in neurodivergent families. It’s important to be aware of the differences and have compassion for the struggles. I love snow days but it can be hard on my active kiddos!
