Moving Targets

“The misses are as important as the hits… When kids only want to do what they are good at, they might lose the joy of doing things just for fun. They might also shy away from the vulnerable, laborious work of mastery…

In a world afraid of failure, target sports turn every “failure” into a chance at calibration.”

Check out the latest issue (https://hebfdn.org/echoes/hit-or-miss/) of H‑E‑B’s Echoes magazine where we participated in a retreat as a family to better understand and support the mental health of children. Did you know that:

* 2/3 adolescents in the US reported that the pandemic had a negative impact on their mental health

* 80% of those surveyed felt their social and emotional well-being was worse than in previous summers

* 1/6 adolescents in the US experienced a major depressive episode in 2020.

The pandemic continues to put us into a “moving target” situation. Let’s be as targeted in protecting our children’s sense of safety and well-being, just as we are in trying to prevent the spread of COVID. This is their childhood and the stories we tell ourselves will be what they will remember of it.
