Reasons to tell your child about their diagnosis
As a parent, it can be hard to share with your child their diagnosis, especially if it is a lifelong condition such as autism or ADHD. We may be afraid that this will be their identity rather than just a diagnosis. However, it is important to recognize that these diagnostic terms are not “bad.” We should not be ashamed of ourselves and these descriptive labels. Often times children who are aware of their diagnosis can better understand themselves, their needs, and the unique ways they are wired. Children and adolescents who know their diagnosis can better ask for help and learn to advocate for themselves. In addition, the community you find by seeking out others with similar experiences can be so life-giving. If you are looking for help in trying to share a diagnosis with your child, let us know. We are happy to help.
